General Immigration Application Tips

Here are some general tips that are applicable to all applications both within and outside the UK:

1. Always tell the truth! This might seem obvious, but whether making a written application or attending a visa interview, it always pays to be as open and truthful as possible. I've always said that the easiest position to defend is the truth. Tell one lie, and you have to tell several others to cover the first one up.

2. Do your research. Please don't go in blind, simply hoping for the best. Take the time to ask around and read up on the relevant application. Understand the rules, the reason for the rules and the reason others have failed. This helps you avoid the same mistakes.

3. If in doubt, provide more. As a general rule, I have found that it is better for you to provide more supporting documents requested of you than less.

4. Apply in time. There is no excuse for overstaying or breaking the law. Make all necessary applications in time. If your application is refused, it is better to leave the country and apply from outside than to remain in breach of the immigration rules.

5. Use the current forms. If applying offline, ensure that you have downloaded or otherwise obtained the most recent application form. An outdated form will not be accepted by the authorities, and this could have severe consequences if you were already close to the end of your visa when applying.

6. Get professional advice. I understand that it may be expensive to secure the services of an immigration adviser or Solicitor, but it is cheaper to do so than to pay visa fees multiple times for failed applications. If you are able to pay for full services from a qualified, regulated professional, great! If not, at least try to get a consultation session. This will give you a good idea of the direction in which to proceed.
